OK, agreed, for the 300/4.5 just rotating the lens isn't too bad. I do that,
and I'd made some marks to make sure of a precise 90 degree rotation. And I
also wonder why Oly didn't do this.
Where I find this slippage really annoying is in trying to get vertical
format closeup / macro shots with say a focussing rail on the tripod. There is
no tripod ring to help there! Perhaps I'm being too fussy, but I like vertical
format for flora because that often gives a nice upward line in the
composition.
So it's there that ease of rotation offered by the elbow bracket seems to be a
plus, preserving centre of gravity (a nice property when the tripod is on
uneven terrain with all three legs at different extension!) and keeping the lens
in approx the same position.
