As I remember, any wild outbreak was met by a significant response -
kill anything in the affected area that could carry it. EVERYTHING.
The blitzkrieg approach worked for small outbreaks but would be
inappropriate for areas where the disease is entrenched.
Australia is also rabies free and that is a result of isolation and
an enthusiastic quarantine procedure. We have recently discovered a
related disease in fruit bats (lyssavirus) which can kill humans but
encounters are less common, the bats do not go 'rabid' and most
people are not susceptible, for some reason.
Good news for me as I have a remarkable propensity for being bitten
by wild critters, the rarer the better - animal magnetism I suppose.
I still get a chill from remembering my frequently handling of a
fruit bat at a zoo I was attached to for a few weeks. Their colony
later tested positive.
