while in india, at least at some of the places i went to, there were so
many people in red (and yellow) shirts--and i mean the BRIGHT kind) that
most my pictures ended up with one of them in the frame. i found it
amusing to be unintentionally adhereing to kodak's (old) philosophy while
shooting fuji :) my cousins and i had another nickname for said chaps with
very slicked back hair all dressed in superbright colors <g>, taken from
from western movie or something.
anyway, progress is slowly being made in putting things online. since i
took photos only when i spotted something (vs going out on a photo trip),
there aren't many keepers. this trip was family oriented, therefore i had
to play the part and go visit long lost relatives, this that, you know the
story, so anything shot was taken enroute, not a single "i'm gonna go out
myself photo trekking."
looking a local (which i am, born there, but not lived), i blended in
somewhat, but it was not as much as advantage as i had thought, since i
would also be expected to act the part of a local who knows the social
rules. as such, it made it harder to go about photo-ing social and street
life. kids in general always were happy to have their pics taken, and
immediately asking to see it (alas), but the adults and older population
always gave me a stern look, so i shot from the hip where i could. the
35-70/3.6 with hood (not only to prevent flare but protect the lens, since
i carried no filters, and space is TIGHT, so i would rather have something
bang into the hood than the lens) made a rather ominous and serious figure
(even more so when it donned the T32 w/ lumiquest softbox!). for that
reason, the 200/4 stayed home, even tho i often was trying to crank the
lens either wider than 35 or longer than 70 in a split second trying to
catch something roadside while in a vehicle. in some ways, a single focal
length would make things simple, and visual profile more discreet (the
1.8MIJ would be ideal), and later crop and scan.
everything got seriously dusty at each outing. i had to dust the camera
and lens barrel every day, it will be sent to omtech for a full CLA.
inside shops and while walking between shops, again i shot from the hip,
taking the camera to my eye every now and then to check exposure ("palm
spot meter"). lots of lovely photo ops everywhere, but it takes time to
walk to the ideal perspective, and take a few shots, and that cant be done
w/o holding up the others.
all in all, a great place, lots better than i expected, would love to to
back again. some of the nicest photos were of the candid family type, and
even managed some fantastic fill-flashed outdoor shots (at 1/60 no less!).
hopefully by end of the week a few dozen shots will be ready for viewing.
