On most of my flashes, If I'm not bouncing it off a ceiling, I use a piece of 
plastic cut from a white milk container. I use velcro on the side edges of 
the flash and on the ends of the plastic. I also make the plastic longer than 
seems necessary, wider than the flash, and bow it out, so it is not flat 
against 
the flash tube. I like to have a little of the unsoftened flash "bleed" out 
from under and over the white plastic. This way, I find the flash output isn't 
too diminished, but 90% ( strictly a guess ) of the flash output is still 
softened. Experiment a bit.
