Do you try to buy pastrami or socks, etc. at the camera store??
WalMart, supermarkets, super drugs, etc. are mass market retailers.
They cannot profitably handle low volume items, esp perishable ones,
like dated film, for example. Stuff that moves stays in the product mix,
stuff that doesn't, doesn't. It's like complaining that you can't seat
six comfortably in your pick-up or you can't haul manure in your sedan.
They are simply different beasts. To the extent that your photographic
needs align with those of the masses, rejoice in the attractive prices
available to you as a result. Otherwise, pay the price for your special
needs and desires.

Not. The grocery store has 1/2 the film stock it once had. Wal-Mart is happy
to sell me SINGLE ROLLS of Superia XTRA 800 at $4 per
but they no longer carry the four-roll-pack for $10. I may live in Kentucky,
but I can do the math. No thank you.
Neither place has 100 speed C-41 of any kind nor any portrait film. Worst of
all, a 24 exposure roll of E-6 is $5.99 !! What are
they smoking?
