Thank you, Piers and Roger, for your useful insights. I'll give this
one a pass and take a closer look at the Tamrons in the meantime.
Musn't let myself get carried away in Gay Paree. Plus, those euros cost
a lot of dollars right now!
Grateful in Gaul,
Philippe Dambournet
PS -- For conversation's sake, I bought an OM-mount Zeiss macro zoom
100-500mm from an Austin photographer who did a lot of nice nature
shots with it. Looks unusual, can't find literature on it yet.

If you are looking for more light on the film than f/4 can give, I
suggest the Tamron SP 35-80 2.8/3.8 as a relatively low
cost/relatively high performance alternative - about the same price as
you paid for the Zuiko, with practically the same light-gathering
capacity as the Angenieux.
The closest to the Zuiko 35-80/2.8 performance-wise may well be the
Tamron SP 35-105 f2.8 Aspheric (One-Touch), made from 1991-4. Very
good performance and reasonably compact (67mm filter, 97mm long,
624g). Used prices around 200-300USD I believe. The Angenieux has a
very good reputation, but the price of 685 Euros seems to be high; I
have seen a used price of 400 Euros.
