The way I tested tripods before getting one, was by extending everything all
the way, and wobbling the head back&forth. The only one that didn't have its
legs go all floppy&jumpy was a Gitzo. Which is interesting, because it also
doesn't feature inter-leg connections halfway down, like many do.
In use, my Gitzo has always felt as rock solid as since that day. I'm using a
Manfrotto 3-way head, others prefer ball heads, and that's where the real
difference in usage is.
