'Onya Brian,

I'm starting to really feel that I belong now. I have both those Freeman
books, the Time-Life set, and the 'Family of Man'. But I also found one of
the more delightful essays in 35mm photography was Lancelot Vining's 'My Way
with the Miniature'. He was a Cont*x RF follower who had all the good (and
some not so good) reasons for not liking Lei*ca and he almost had me buying
a IIIa in the middle fifties when I bought his book. It was an eleventh
edition then so I doubt if it was printed again. My 1954 copy published by
Focal Press cost twenty three shillings and threepence in Oz currency. They
don't write 'em like that anymore...

Hi,

In addition to the books already mentioned, depending on what you are
interested in, I suggest the following that I have found useful /
inspirational.
Don't get them all at once !! Maybe get them from your local library
first.

A . Adams Examples: the Making of 40 Photographs. ISBN 0-8212-1551-5

Life Library of Photography. Color. ISBN 7054-0025-3

The Kodak Library of Creative Photography. Mastering Color. ISBN 0-86706-
243-6

J. Johns. Know your camera. ISBN 0-589-01020-4 ( A basic book written by
a very experienced photographer, examples all made except 1, with
Olympus Pen cameras).

George Schaub. Shooting for Stock. ISBN 0-8174-5871-9 (pbk)
ISBN 0-8174-5870-0 (Hard cover) Inspirational.

Kathryn Marx. Photography for the Art Market. ISBN 0-8174-5444-6; 0-8174-
5445-4 (pbk) Other ways of looking at subjects.

Julian Calder & John Garrett. The Travelling Photographer's Handbook. My
copy is ISBN 0-330-2898-9; I think there are different, later editions.

Michael Freeman. Photo School. ISBN 0-8174-5402-0 Just what it says. A
course with 100 projects. Even if you don't do them they are worthwhile
reading about.

Michael Freeman. The 35mm Handbook.ISBN 0-906286-21-2 A complete
course from basic to professional. Interesting to read even if you don't do
the
course.

Just a selection of books I have, many dating from 25 years ago.

Oh; don't forget "The Family of Man". Those photos are inspirational too.
Steichen I think..

Cheers, Brian
