Subject: [OM] Olympus is failing with their marketing strategy!
Did any of you notice Canon's advertisement that was inserted into the USA
Today's national newspaper yesterday?
Canon clearly has their marketing strategy down-pat and I feel Olympus has
failed miserably in marketing throughout the last 20 years or so. But then,
what new right?
<SNIP>
The brochure covers the point and shoot camera, as well as others and the
last page depicts their large Canon lens inventory. I feel this is great
amrketing ploy, because even the amateur feels like he's buying into the
best suportive line (pro), with the possibility of expanding or diving into
the more professional camera, at a later date.
Sam, I agree with everything you've said. But, I would add that it's
not a marketing ploy. He *is* buying into the best supported line
with the possibility of expanding into a more professional camera at
a later date. I know of a no. of N*kon pros who were shooting digital
that switched this year to Canon. They said they'd never go back to
N*kon.
Not only do they have their marketing strategy down-pat, they have
the R&D strength and product to back it up. C*n*n has N*kon on the
ropes, if you ask me. Look at what C*n*n has produced since the
D1H/D1X came out: The D30, 1D, D60, 1Ds, 10D, and Digital Rebel 300D.
In that time, N*kon has announced but not shipped in any volume, the
D2H, a camera that at best, is no better than a now
rumored-to-be-discontinued 1D.
In contrast, Olympus kills their OM system line of products, and then they
fail to capitalize on creating an adapter that would allow people who still
use OM lenses on opportunity to use those lenses on their E-1 digital
camera.
Doing that would completely invalidate their entire marketing
rationale for for the E-1, which is that superior performance is
obtained with a digital-dedicated set of lenses with an image circle
designed for the sensor size. Ain't gonna happen...
Olympus better wake up soon....
Unfortunately, I think Oly's E-1 is too little, too late for any
real success. By success, I mean sales success and meaningful market
penetration. I hope that is not the case, but I'm not holding my
breath.
Sam....
