Bill, My first choice would be 1 1/2' ABS pipe which is flat black, no
need to paint. Painting PVC is easy, just buy a can of spray paint of
your choice to match whatever ambient condition. I recommend a wipe down
with lacquer thinner first then blast away. You could even buy two
colors to try to break up the silhouette. I think getting close to 18%
grey would be the best average in any color. Maybe duck taping metal
weights like rebar to the PVC would counteract the displaced water. I
also recommend spraying a coat of silicone in the tripod first, it'll
shed water like a duck's back ;>)
I have a Gitzo Safari Studex and the legs telescope up from the lower
section the opposite of most tripods. This also puts the sturdiest leg
section on the ground which seems better. I was set up in a creek last
week, no problems. Best part was that I scored it at a garage sale for $50!
