The Oly auto-focus SLR designs failed. I don't think they lost all that
money and market share just to get us. They simply failed at that
business. I know a guy who worked in a major camera store during that
time. Boy does he hate those AF Olys. Apparently they just didn't work
reliably. Anyway, Oly had no AF 35mm cameras on which to base a DSLR.
Obviously a DSLR based on a mechanical stop down, non AF lens system
doesn't work.
So they decided to develop a DSLR for that purpose alone, rather than
adapt 35mm camera technology. Seems like the right thing for somebody to
do; start a whole system designed specifically for digital.
On the other hand, this business with the MA-1 is really annoying. Why
not just hand a sop to the old Zuikoholics and give us the damn adapter.
At least then we'd buy a few bodies. Whatever DSLR I buy, I will at
least buy one general purpose zoom with it. If it all works out, I would
then slowly buy more lenses. It's not that I want to go back to
stop-down metering, it's that I won't buy a whole system of lenses up
front for a new system. Cost aside, I don't want to take that big a risk
until I know the system has 'legs'. And Oly doesn't have a full system
of lenses and accessories to sell yet anyway. My Oly bellows is stop
down, why not let me use it. Stop down wouldn't be that big a deal for a
lot of the photography I do, at least in the short run, and a zoom would
take care of most of the other kind. I'm thinking I won't buy any DSLR
unless an OM adapter is available. If I did decide to buy heavily into a
different system in today's market, I think Can*n would be the sensible
choice, for me.
And all that stuff about the higher resolution digital lenses doesn't
really apply to the E-1, as it has an anti-alias filter to reduce that
resolution. When they get to the 12mp E-3, maybe, but for now, at least
the better of the OM Zuikos have at least have enough resolution.
Maybe I should just get a Nik*n 5700 or wait to see how the S*ny 828
(8mp, Zeiss T* 28-200 eq. f2-2.8) tests and wait for another round of
DSLR development before diving in.

That was something I never understood. If Nikon and Canon could carry
their existing customers forward it just seemed perverse that Oly
would kiss us off.
