It's obvious Olympus has given a lot of thought to the first lenses for the
E-1.
The 300/2.8 is a brilliant choice, because it takes advantage of the small
4/3 sensor to produce a FOV equivalent to what you'd get from a 500mm or
600mm lens on a 35mm camera. Sure, it's expensive, but the price is
secondary to the sports and nature photographers who'll rush right out in a
buying frenzy to obtain this lens and body.
A similar argument can be made for the 50mm macro lens.
