Hi John,
The problem only seems to occur with a winder attached. Shutter fires
ok at all speeds without winder but as I said the motor drive/winder
cap is missing so I need a winder attached to prevent light fogging.
Would this be costly to repair?

Then it's the dreaded "clack" of shutter lock, which can be caused by
any of
a dozen different things, even an oily magnet. Whether or not a winder
is
used should make no difference.

Hi John,
The shutter is closed. I can see the dappled pattern when I take off
the lens.

Are you sure shutter is open? Sounds like the dreaded shutter lock
where
the mirror is up but shutter does not open. Next time it does this,
take
lens off and see if first curtain pattern is showing.
Usually if the shutter is locked "open", pushing the meter switch up
to
"reset" will not have an affect. It will only reset the shutter if
mirror
is up, shutter not open (pattern showing).
Shutter lock can be caused by alkaline or lithium batteries. Shutter
"open"
is another set of problems, sometimes caused by bad brushes or a bad
ASA
ceramic.
