Yes, it's a steep learning curve.
I'd probably tackle this particular example with layers, bringing up the
shadow areas and then using the blending modes to bring back the highlights
with a feathered, large brush.
One of the things about PS is the fact that you can do the same thing
several ways; there are dodging and burning tools, but I've avoided them so
far.
I get quite a bit of practice in restoration techniques (unfortunately)!
