It means the writer has a future in advertising, a way with words and a
rather loose sense of the need for meaningful, or objectively truthful,
information in them. :-)
"Soviet" lenses vary over a broad range from excellent to really poor.
The special excitement they offer compared to lenses from other places
is that they can vary over that same range across different examples of
the same lens! To give you a little perspective on quality control in
the ex SSRs, there is at least one company which buys their cameras new,
takes them apart, puts them back together correctly, calibrates and
resells them with some guarantee of consistent performance and reliability.
There is a lot of info about them on the net to help one navigate the
reefs and shoals and come home to harbor with a good lens bargain, if
you find that sort of thing enjoyable.

exception!"
What does this really mean ?
