Sorry to have taken up bandwidth. Found the answer.
Go to control panel, and then display / settings and set at True Color 32 bit.
Makes all the difference in the world compared to 256 colors!

Subject: [OM] OT viewing one's images on screen
Within the last four weeks all of my on screen images have taken on a visibly
specled almost grainy look with some separation of colours. This applies to my
own images in process though slide scanning, being PhotoShopped, and after
uploading or whether I am viewing images from others' web sites. The best I can
describe my on screen look is that the images, regardless of size, have a back
ground texture just slightly resembling the texture of needlepoint embroidery
fabric.
Can any one tell me what possibly ails my screen and whether Windows 98 has a
screen tune up diagnostic anywhere.
Thanks
John Hudson
