I own licensed versions of both PaintShop Pro (hereinafter PSP) and Photoshop 7
(hereinafter PS7). Both PSP and PS7 have more functionality than most users
would ever need, but they also have different strengths and weaknesses. From a
purely pragmatic "average user" perspective, PSP is more than enough, and it's
relatively inexpensive. I've found PS7's interpolation algorithms to be
generally superior to PSP, but for both programs, if you *really* need to do
some fancy stuff with image interpolation/manipulation, you'd probably end up
buying a third-party plugin in any event. PS7 established the "standard" for
image-editing plugins, and PSP follows it, so if it's available for PS7, it'll
probably work "out of the box" for PSP.
In short, knowing what I do now and if I didn't have specific need for some of
the industrial-strength capabilities of PS7, I'd go buy PSP. Nevertheless,
it's nice having them both. ;-)
