Hi folks,
My take on this discussion is this.
One of the reasons we have OMs and Zuikos is to make photos. Other
reasons include having shiny objects in glass cases for display.
We use Zuikos to transfer an image to film. We discuss how they do this,
and the relative merits of different Zuikos, and of other manufacturers lenses.
OMs, XAs etc hold the Zuiko in the correct position relative to the film and
provide services such as the shutter, keeping unwanted light from the film,
holding the film in a cassette. We discuss the services provided by each
kind of body, what limitations there are, and how to best overcome them.
The film is the medium for holding the captured image. It would be strange
indeed if that was not discussed.
Paper is one of the ways that the captured image is displayed; displayed for
sale, information, sharing with friends, bragging - whatever.
Scanners are one way to get an image from one medium to another, or in an
edited form, back to the same medium.
Developing, enlargers and computers are all means for image manipulation.
Image manipulation enables change through cropping, control of contrast,
control of colour, sharpness etc.
An image may be viewed "exactly" as photographed, or as the photographer
envisaged it; or later sees that it may be envisaged. Thus an image may
move from being a straight record of the subject, to being art; or by
elimination of extraneous matter, move to being a more direct statement of
the precise subject.
We discuss how to compose a photograph. We discuss how to manipulate a
photo. We discuss how to get to where a photograph might be taken, and
how to deal with hazards on the way; such as X-rays, treacherous winter
roads, and so on. We discuss how to share photos including exhibitions
(what use is a photo if it cannot be seen?), screen display, and sale. We
discuss what we see on the way. And on the way we have got to know each
other. Relationships have been and are built.
As I see it, topics such as the RAM needed in computers used for image
manipulation are right on target, since computers are increasingly needed. It
is often helpful to discuss alternatives, and specific computer mother-boards
etc since these are basic to the process, and the information is often
difficult
to find "out there". The group has a wealth of information on such matters
and I find it great that we can share it.
Paper durability is right on target, as also is the kind of ink used in
printers.
I think that constructive discussion on these all matters is part of this forum
in so far as it all enables the placing of images on viewing media, via our
OMs and Zuikos, for our benefit. The OMs and Zuikos are a part of the
process, a vital part, but a part.
It's my opinion that the aspects of our discussions that spoil this forum and
which should be eliminated, include the following:
Bad temper, bad language, and insults. (note that if you are trying to be
funny (crack a joke), it helps if you use an emoticon - smiley; since that
signals how you are trying to be seen). People cannot see your face as you
write, or hear the tone of your voice; such are all cues we use face-to-face
which are not available to the computer reader, so smileys have an important
job to do.
Replying to previous posts by simply hitting <reply> and failing to edit out
all
the extraneous data from previous messages, such as the 8 (or more)
signature pieces of the previous Replies, and the endlessly time-wasting
repeated chunks of the previous thread contributions. Snip out the endless
repeats.
And, lest I forget, html posts. These contaminate the digest quite
annoyingly. The "new" code that appears from time to time is also a
nuisance for a text reader ( I forget its name for the moment).
Sincerely,
Brian
