I do not count factual corrections as hostile, but there were a few responses
that came close to being rude about being off-topic, while the discussions
about Triumphs and 110,000 horsepower engines went un-challenged.
In particular, I was able to learn a lot from CH and this discussion. I was not
aware that Intel had re-introduced a form of segmented addressing in order to
get around the max RAM problem. I predict THAT is going to be no fun for users
who need large address spaces. Wintel software will have to be re-written in
order to break the limit, whereas PowerPC software will simply have to be
re-compiled.

Okay, but I believe I stand vindicated. It appears that you cannot actually use
more than 32 bits worth of contiguous addressing space by a single process.
(Thanks, Chuck!)
Perhaps this sounds like a pedantic argument, but I want to work on some images
that will benefit from 64 bit addressing. (I have several 4x5 panoramas that
are already too big to stitch in Photoshop.) I do realize that the vast
majority of computer users simply want to push a button, have it come on, and
read their email. Such users will have no interest in contiguous vs segmented
address space!

I apologize for any perceived slight. It was not my intention to laugh at
anyone merely for their choice of computer. I do, however, reserve the right to
laugh at those who insist that there is no other world outside of Wintel --
they deserve the laughter, just as much as a Canon or Nikon user who sneers at
our tiny, sturdy OM gems!
(Sorry, got carried away and almost got on-topic there... :-)
A lot of Wintel users accuse Mac users of being defensive about their choice.
It's good to see the shoe on the other foot for a change! :-)
