It's sRGB profiled. If you're using a color-managed workflow (default on Macs)
it should look the same on either monitor.

I don't believe JPEG compression would have very much to do with shadow area. I
think that's largely due to shooting at night with slide film. (Shadows are
VERY dark at night, even after a 32 minute exposure... :-)
That said, it is rather heavily compressed, in deference to those with dial-up
connections. The 54MB original scan is sharper, but doesn't have a lot more
shadow detail. There isn't any detail to pull out of the shadows -- just noise.
