Yes, I noticed the optical illusion at the time, when I was shooting low.
Some shots were taken from an almost supine position at the roadside, others
crouching, some standing. Once I even burned myself on a service cover,
which was close to incandescent in the sun! So I suspect that the illusion
is caused by slight 'false flats' in the road, and my low position, relative
to the cyclists, who are coming down the hill towards me.
One day I hope to get to experience the testing conditions in New Zealand..!
