I recently acquired two Sigma lenses from that website. I told you about my
impressions of the 24-70 and now it is turn to tell you what I think about the
other one, the Sigma 75-300 1:4-5.6 APO Macro.
It is kinda heavy, but this is negligent compared to the weight of the lenses
covering the whole range. With both caps on, at the length is 6 inches and
when fully extended, it reaches 8 inches. The f stops go to f22. Feels very
solid in hand with cool rubber grip and the fonts are cool too. Overall, very
pretty.
Mine came with a 55mm Vivitar haze filter. When removed, reminded me of the
Zuiko 28/3.5 because of the front element. It extends nice and easy. The
macro is at the 300mm.
I do not have teleZuiko, but can compare to the two lenses I have, Vivitar
28-200 and Upsilon 135/2.8. I know, you have not heard about the Upsilon?
Here is the story (although it is somewhere in the archives):
When I bought my OM1 in 1996, I bought it with three lenses. The 50/1.8 and
two Upsilons-the 28/2.8 and 135/2.8. I suspect that they are old Sigmas,
because the fonts of the letters and numbers are exactly the same and also look
like ones from the same era. The best picture of a sunset I have ever taken,
was with the 135/2.8. There was absolutely no flare and the sun was placed in
different places in the frames taken.
There is absolutely no parameter in which the Vivitar excels, but the Upsilon
is a little easier to focus, I guess I need a split screen, like the one on my
OM PC. What is a reasonable cost for one of those by the way?
I like the fact that the image in the viewfinder is much, much brighter than
the one with the Vivitar.
The quality of the pictures seems to be consistent throughout (as with the
other one, the pictures are sharper than those taken with the 50/1.8) the whole
range, unlike the Vivitar and another lens I have for an old Praktica I never
use, it has a sentimental value only (another one of the items from my
childhood?I knew a professional photographer using exactly the same one). They
get very soft, this one is tack sharp, but of course the pictures taken in the
mountains of some houses and hills, turned a little soft, because of the
atmospheric haze it picked up. Funny, I can?t see the difference between the
ones taken with the filter and without.
I cannot tell you about quality at the macro setting, which is at the 300mm and
the ratio is ¼. Wife put the film in a place where no one can find it anymore,
I had it on the table ready to be developed, I guess it was on her way?
To me weight is not a problem, I have problem with changing lenses too many
times, because the places where I take pics are windy and all kinds of foreign
materials get in, so for practicality, these two lenses are perfect for me.
Some of you would not like the aperture, but I do not do street and 990f my pix
are taken with a tripod. The lens has minimal distortion. It focuses opposite
of the Zuikos.
There you have it, happy?
Boris
P.S. Feel free to aks questions if you have any.
