I still want to thank all people who took the time to reply
to my questions regarding long teles. I'll be keeping all
replies and will re-read them often as I come to a
conclusion.
I have not decided on anything yet, in fact some comments
make me doubt whether owning a long tele lens is really
such a great idea after all, as use is ticklish and quite
confined.
Generally I would be willing to sacrifice a little bit of
quality for a little bit more usability. Transport would
definitely be an issue as I had to carry the stuff with me
when hiking. Besides I need to carry the solid tripod as
well, plus the rest of the outfit. Everybody has stressed
the point of working carefully with it (vibration, focus,
tripod,...), I will certainly respect that.
I will most likely buy a 500 or 600mm mirror lens first and
see how well I get along with it before considering the
conventional 600mm Zuiko. Besides usability, cost is
another issue of mine here. I'm not willing nor able to
spend thousands of dollars for a lens that will get used a
couple of times only on special occasions.
I was happy to learn that the Vivitar 600mm focuses in the
same direction as the Zuikos. That is definitely a major
plus in its favor for me.
Again many thanks for your input,
Thomas
