Hello everybody
Below is a copy of a letter ( #3) Gary Reese wrote to the list but which for
some strange reason never made it onto the server. Brian Swale

<< I'm fairly interested, how much is a decent price for this lens with
fungus? >>
Good grief, it's what YOU are willing to to pay, if anything at all, rather it
than having ANY market value. Before eBay, a fungus ridden 50mm f/1.4
would have gone into the trash or be given to a repairman. In 595 auctions I
tracked, no one ever sold a MC1 or MC2 version with fungus. The SC1 and
SC2 models with fungus averaged $20, which probably included buyers who
speculated they could get by with it, or just didn't know any better. $20 is
less than the average of my otherwise "0 cosmetic grade" at:
http://members.aol.com/olympusom/lenstests/default.htm It is a crap shoot
what a seller will get for a fungus ridden lenses. Frankly, I'd pay nothing.
<< Also, how much should a good CLA cost for the lens? >>
You don't know it can be CLA'ed until it is taken apart. As has been
mentioned on the OM List many times, if the fungus has been on the
elements long, you can't remove it without scratching up the element or
elements it has eaten into. Plus, you don't know how deep the disassembly
needs to be. You'd be lucky to get a repairman to disassemble it, since they
aren't likely to charge you if it is unrepairable. The repairman is basically
thinking: "Why take the time to even disassemble it when I have all these
sure bet repairs I need to get to."
