You are quite right about shooting and editing digitally, the percentage is
big [I can't remember exactly what it is.] Most films are edited in Non
Linear Editing systems, meaning even if it is shot on film, it gets
transferred to digital, edited on a computer, and the lab puts the pieces
back together using the original film.
Distributing and exhibiting digitally has been done, but problem is deciding
on a standard and the investment for theatres all over the
country......there is no standard system and the technology is continuously
evolving. Piracy of the final digital content is a big concern too. The
cost saving in not having to make all those film copies and ship them around
would be huge however.

transfered to 35mm for distribution to theaters. (not that that means
digital is any better.) :)
