Confession time. About nine years ago, I did a TON of airline
travel and had a rather short-fused temper. One morning I drove
to the airport to catch my puddle-jumper flight but the
"gatekeepers" wouldn't accept the fact that I arrived a few
seconds late. They had to teach me a lesson, I guess.
To say that I was incensed is an understatement. I went back to
my Toyota pick-up truck and winged my fannypack at the left-rear
panel as hard as I could. The instant it struck I knew it was
serious trouble. It wasn't just my wallet, tickets and Tom
Clancy book in there...
So was my 100/2.8. That lens put a hefty dent into the side of
my truck!
I drove like a madman down to St. Louis where I ended up
catching the connecting flight, but didn't bother looking at the
lens until well after drinks and pretzels were served.
I was crushed, knowing that my all-time favorite lens was also
crushed. It wasn't going to be pretty, that's for sure. I took
the lens out, carefully looked it over and discovered that it
didn't suffer even a tiny ding. It must have hit squarely on
the focus ring.
Nine years later, I'd say that the lens is even sharper now than
when I first bought it. But I don't hit my cars anymore (or fly
anywhere either).
