I found such a program in the guise of WinHex (a hex editor) that can
save and write disk formats. The same page also had Hex dumps of good
working SM cards in various formats. I took the 64Mb format and dumped
it back to the card. It has the correct directories and looks good on
the computer (even checks out to be formatted as FAT12), but the camera
still doesn't accept it. :>(

I think the bottom line is that once a card is formatted by windows in a
card reader, it is considered defective by the camera. Card must be
formatted by the camera for it to work. Special tool would be required
to
un-do the windows formatting, which I think was mentioned by Mr. Ling .

Yes, I have the original card that came with the camera and it works
fine.
I don't see any difference between that card and the one that isn't
working
(other than the difference in capacity).

Have you tried another card, to see if the camera is okay? If the card
has
been "formatted" by windows, could that be why the camera says it is
defective? Instruction sheets say that a window formatted card will not
work
in the camera.

Yes -that's the problem, the camera refuses to re-format the card - it
gives me an error that the card is faulty. However, I have run every
diagnostic test on the card I can find using my PC and a card reader and
it
works fine. I found a few web sites that mention similiar problems with
other Olympus digital cameras as well a Fuji cameras and smartmedia
cards.
I just can't seem to find a solution!

Do you mean should the camera be able to format the card? Yes.

But shouldn't it be able to format a card even if the format on it may
be
invalid?

Card has to formatted by the camera, not windows, for it to work.

Subject: Re: [OM] Smartmedia - was A quick E-1 poll
On the subject of digital has anyone experienced a problem with
smartmedia
memory and the E10 or E20 cameras? I have a relatively new smartmedia
card
- 64 Mb - (I primarily use a compact flash card, but needed the extra
memory). The images displayed properly on the E10. I shutdown the
camera,
removed the media card and used an external reader only to discover that
the card had nothing on it! I used some utilities to eventually pull
some
of the photos off the card, but lost most of the better ones. Now the
E10
will no longer recognize the card and will not format it. I tried
WinHex
to reformat the card on the reader by replacing the format with the
format
from a known good smartmedia 64Mb card, but the camera still refuses to
recognize the card. I can read and write to the card without a problem
on
the PC using the card reader, so I don't see anything wrong with the
card
itself.
Any clues on this problem?
