Empirical assessment - no. Was concerned about that so used a fairly
tight weave sock - a cotton polyester mix. If you look at the mini
bags of Silica gel packed with everything, these are often porous. To
check for both of us, just took one of the filled socks and shook it
vigorously over a black piece of paper to check for white dust. Other
than 'ambient' dust on the outside, nothing. Bottom line: if there is
dust, it is no more so than all that blowing around us and the great
redeeming feature of silica gel is the absence of chemical reactivity.
