I bought 2 of those protective bags. One is rated up till 1000 ISO film,
the other is rated up till 400 ISO.
Last winter I vent from Norway to Canada for vacation. I brought film from
Norway (combination of Provia 100 and Provia 400). During the trip the film
went through the following X-Ray path.
Outbound:
Stockholm (no bag around the film)
Oslo (no bag around the film)
London (no bag around the film)
London (no bag around the film) (we got lost, and had to go trough security
once more)
Return:
Calgary (Bag around the film, bought them in Calgary)
Vancouver (Bag around the film)
London (Bag around the film)
All the films received 7 scans with x-ray, some of the scans without
protection. I'm not at all able to see any kind of flare or loss of quality
due to this exposure. Now days I always carry my film in those protective
bags, just to be sure.
Those protective bags are rather cheap (I think I paid somewhere around 20
Canadian Dollar for each of those), and they can hold 20-25 rolls of
ordinary film.
I don't really think the X-Ray machines in the civilized parts of the world
are a considerable treat. I'm more concerned about my ability to take
decent photographs, but no bag in the world could help me with this.

What ever shall we do when all mail is x-rayed? It is not often convenient
or possible to purchase the film at or near a photo location. Nor is it
always possible to use a decent lab etc...
