Do they have a specific use in mind? What you might shoot for a newspaper
announcement might be different from what they might want to put on their
desks at work, or on the wall over the fireplace. If you can, shoot a
variety of styles to cover all bases.
You might try a "simple" headshots to begin. Try different head placement:
his higher, then hers, heads tilted together, then same way, eyes toward
camera, then into the distance, etc. Then back off a bit and get
head/shoulder busts.
To get more artsy, ask them what brought them together and see if you can
incorporate something of that into the image. Was it music, religion, work,
school? For example, if they met at school, try to use something in the
setting that reminds them of that -- thirty years from now, it will bring
back a flood of memories. Or ask what they recall of when they first met,
and try to work something of that into the shot (if it doesn't provoke an
argument! ;^). My wife and I have a shot of us with our St. Bernard next to
a sapling we planted that year. The dog is long gone, the tree was huge when
we sold the house, but that image brings back happy memories every time we
pause to look at it.
Technically, unless you have a studio lighting system with modeling lights,
try to shoot outdoors, or at least with ambient light. It's hard to
control/predict shadows, especially with two subjects, when you're lighting
with strobes. Use a reflector to bounce light into shadows if you need to.
