"Old-fashioned hand-making techniques still have a place at Olympus. The
Zuiko digital 300 f/2.8 telephoto lens for the E-1 is the most polished lens
in existence. Apparently, the front element of each lens is hand polished by
one of five lens masters at the Olympus factory in Tatsuno, Japan. Heino
Hilbig, the marketing director of Olympus digital imaging europe told OP:
'the front lens element is hand polished for 15 days- on each side!' With
just five polishers spending 30 days on each lens, these lenses won't be
flying off the assembly line, but at a projected price of 5,000 euros supply
is likely to keep pace with demand."
No one has yet confirmed how the wyoming factory is able to achieve these
results within a week.
