The term "rare earth" refers directly to the Lanthanide series of
elements.

Rebuttal would be wasted and not that which I intend.

Lanthanide AND Actinide Series.

You crack me up Bill!
That is the best disguise if CONFIRMATION as rebuttal I have ever seen!

Thorium-228 half life is under two years!

This is GROSSLY misinforming the list with a factoid devoid of context.
If all Thorium was Th-228, there would be NO natural thorium on the
planet!!!

Where, exactly, did I suggest that *all* thorium was 228? I was merely
pointing out the error of *your* statement that these were trace
concentrations of long life nucleides - neither statement being true!

Not by any of the years of graduate chemistry training I received was
"organic" defined as "carbon containing"!!! Perhaps I did not receive
a good education.

Quite possibly, but I couldn't possibly comment.
No organic compound does not include carbon, the presence of carbon does
not preclude any other element - indeed, organic chemistry (the
chemistry of carbon containing compounds) would be pretty limited if it
did.
Organic chemistry includes metals - - you would die
without metaloproteins - - and inorganic chemistry would not be
possible as we know it without the element carbon.

Should you care to consult the opening chapter of one of the major
textbooks of organic chemistry, Morrison and Boyd, you will find the
explanation of *why* organic chemistry came to be the chemistry of
carbon containing compounds - despite the fact that most organic
chemicals are synthesised rather than extracted from living organisms
these days. Good advice (eventually, Bill!!) - I think I have made it clear
throughout this thread that the danger is NOT with the lenses in their
normal state, but of the ingestion of any parts of the lens once it has
been pulverised. Keep it safe, keep it whole!
Keep your wrist watch on, your old 50/1.2 warm in your pocket and stock
up on B & W film.
