Sorry Ken, didn't mean to hold out, but I've been busy
planning my own trip to the Black Hills with my SUV (GMC
Vandura -- that counts doesn't it? It gets terrible gas
mileage so I think it qualifies. Also carries Zuikos) and
the Airstream Overlander. Airstream enthusiasts are the
only group I've discovered that rivals Zuikophiles'
relentless attachment to a relique.
If you're going to be in the south central region of CO,
don't miss the Great Sand Dunes NM. Something for
everyone. There's a campground there, though you might have
to put of with creeps in trailers like me. No store,
laundry, or swimming pool if that helps you.
Someone else mentioned Mesa Verde and the Durango area. I
enjoyed the narrow guage train ride from Durango to
Silverton and imagine the girls would love it. The
mountains in that area and north of Durango (San Juan Mts.)
are gorgeous. I am guessing that they afford more mountain
jeeping than the eastern slope because of the effect of the
wetter climate. I just remember wanting to go off-road any
number of times. When I was there in 1994, I remember
cogitating over and over and how to justify purchase of a
Jeep. Fortunately, I got back to Iowa and sobered up. ;-)
North of Durango is Ouray. Gorgeous mountains. Try out
the hot springs in Ouray when you get tired of your Jeep's
hot springs. The girls will love it.
If your intent is to go into Utah/Arizona, Monument Valley
is excellent bang for the buck. The Navajo control things
pretty tightly, so you'll have to behave yourself SUV-
wise. Head outside the Navajo Nation for four-wheeling
follies. Moab, UT is the capital of Jeepheads. Load up
with food and ice, check out Arches and Island of the Sky
(Canyonlands) and find out in Moab where Real Men take
their women folk in a Jeep.
Have a great time.
