Two words: Edwal NoScratch. It also fixes scratches on film going
through the scanner. A bit tricky loading the film carrier

I think I remember Edwal NoScratch from by B&W darkroom days about 30
years ago but I don't think I ever used any. I'll have to give it a
try. Of course, some of the scratches were so bad that NoScratch would
only work if it somehow managed to also paint in all the right color film
grains.
Why will the dust be worse and the film carrier tricky to load?
If you don't have a perfectly clean negative to work with (how ever does?)
the NoScratch will clump dust particles together. As I say, it is easier
to spot out dust particles than scratches. In a normal film strip carrier
you'll have less flexibility in sliding the strip around to line it up
because of the layer of NoScratch on the negative. (I.e., gooey mess.)
If you get No Scratch, you'll probably want to pick up some Edwal
Anti-Static Film Cleaner as well to clean it off. You'll probably have a
little clean up to do on the film carrier too.
Good luck! It's not for routine use, but if the negative is important
enough, it will be worth the extra hassle in most cases. And you're right,
it won't completely repair a really broad scratch, but it will still help
somewhat.
