Sorry for the OT but I wish someone had warned me ahead of time. I think
there's a good probability that one of you listees owns one of these. I
own(ed) one of these units until about 10:30 this morning. At that time
it made a single, distinct, loud click. Investigating the cause of the
noise (I thought it was the head mechanism on the hard drive) I
discovered that smoke had finally figured out how to escape being pent
up in the electronics of the UPS.
A mad scramble ensued to disable and disconnect the device and get it
off the carpeted floor. Fortunately the carpet did not figure out the
smoke escaping trick. I removed said device to the garage where it
continued to smoke in such earnest that I removed it to the great outdoors.
It finally quit smoking, I removed the battery and then breathed a great
sigh of relief. Had it not been raining I would have been several miles
away taking a walk around the local reservoir.
This is the second APC unit I have owned. The first lasted about 7 or 8
years and gave good service until the battery died. I replaced it with
this one a bit over a year ago since I needed more power.
Moral of the story. Register your electronic devices with the
manufacturer so they know how to contact you on a product recall.
Following is the APC recall site:
