When my wife and I were in Normandy, we noticed that a lot of the diesel
buses in and around Alençon had the unmistakeable smell of chips (french
fries, fries, pommes frites, whatever...) as they drove by. My cousin
explained to me that the reason for this was that diesel was mixed with
canola oil as a pollution-control measure. From that day forward, my
wife's nose would wiggle and she'd say "Mmmmm, fries," everytime a bus went by.
