I played with TCL a bit a few years back. I was doing the boot camp for
Arsdigita (founded by Philip Greenspun of photo.net fame) and their toolkit
was all based on TCL.

Personally, I tend to use Perl more often and prefer it but that could just
be because I'm more familiar with it. I did find that TCL was pretty good at
string manipulation though (not that Perl isn't but TCL seemed to be more
geared in that direction).

In terms of "claim to fame" I think the biggest things that it's known for
is for developing GUI interfaces in TCL/TK (or the Gnu project, gtk). It's
also the language that Expect is based on, which is used for automating
interactive command-line things (such as telnetting to a router and
configuring it) where the program can be set to wait for certain prompts or
responses before continuing on (and probably also allows for evaluation of
the responses and doing different things depending on the response). Never
really dug into TCL/TK or Expect though so I can't really comment on their
relative merits.
