Just a quick FYI as Jim is on his way soon and others may be...
Recently, Zahi Hawass head of the egyptian antiquities organization
changed policy - no photography in any tomb in any tomb, period. The
directive is being enforced somewhat sporadically on the ground
however; and not only at tomb sites. Some places will insist on a
permit, even if the ticket office is no longer selling then, some don't
care, some guards look for a little extra income by being open to
persuasion.
Jim, if you are in cairo you should have no problems on the giza
plateau but expect problems if you go in any of the mastaba tombs there
(any you really should...)
Last time I was at the cairo museum photography was allowed (with no
flash anywhere), but not in the royal mummy room. To get your camera in
it has to be X-rayed, and the operators sometimes play a funny (to
them) game where the camera is X-rayed and keeps rolling on the
conveyor and drops of the end!!!
Regards
Pete
