Two types, you've had (and I've got!) both, although there are internal
improvements on later types of the one you owned previously.
The one you currently have is the original, house code MMS. The one you had
previously was MMS(N), which was improved later (I doubt that you can see
the improvements).
The eSIF does not mention the early version, but the exploded parts diagram
at http://olympus.dementia.org/Hardware/PDFs/MotorDrive1.pdf shoes all three
clearly.
At least 5000 of the early version were made (judging by the serial number
of mine) Perhaps you can better that?

Subject: [OM] How many version of MD1 are/were there?
Hi All,
Can anybody give me an indication of how many types of the Motor Drive 1
there were made? Reason for asking is that I have in my possession one that
only has a large release button on top (covering the entire release button
area) and no hole for a cable release!
I've owned one previously that was the usual type you see (small button with
cable release hole near).
Thanks,
Jason
