whether or not you're still depressing the button on the MD/Winder handle.

The MD's and winders synchronize the release/wind cycle via the mirror up/down
change over switch,
in the OM body. The motor first "pushes" the shutter release linkage, then as
the mirror flips up,
the mirror switch disconnects the motor from the battery and shorts the motor
out, so as to stop
the motor dead, via electro-mechanical braking. When the mirror drops back down
again, at end of
exposure, the switch re-connects the motor to the battery which then winds-on
the film.
Interestingly, the MD1 puts the full motor current through this switch, while
the MD2 buffers the
switch and puts the current through transistors. It would be interesting to
know if this switch
gets burnt by heavy MD1 users? (see
http://olympus.dementia.org/Hardware/PDFs/18VG_MD1.pdf for the
MD1, schematic)

Tim Hughes
