Later versions of the 50/1.8 also have plastic aperture rings. I have in
front of me a 'miJ' that sounds and feels very much like a couple of
35-70/3.5-4.5s. A little easier movement between detents, but the
detents hold more firmly than the metal models. A slightly lighter feel
and sound, but certainly no grittiness.

plastic aperture ring. I know I've replaced a couple of them on the 3.5-4.5, though I
don't recall ever seeing one broken on the 4.0 version.
