Rack and Pinion, defined
========================
If you laid a ladder down on the ground, that's your rack. If you suspended a
big gear from above, meshing into the rungs of the
ladder from above, that's your pinion. Hence, rack and pinion.
As you turn the big gear, you're driving the rack back and forth, steering the
car or focussing the super-tele, as the case may be.
