Yup -- we went out on one of the boats for race #3 of the main series; good
stuff as far as atmosphere goes, but you can't get as near to the action as
you might want.

Longer lenses, then a longer lens still. Even from on the water up right on
the edge of the start/turn area, the boats were a _very_ long way off --
nobody that's not an official or racer is allowed anywhere near them. I took
a 500/8 and 2x converter, and still wanted more length for 990f the race,
except right at the closest point. Somewhere I have some prints, but none of
them were worth much, to be honest -- there's a few of the boat on the way
back to shore, but even then they're a bit iffy.
The media are on chase boats and/or helicopters to get within a decent
range, and they're still using very big glass. I reckon your best bet will
be to find somewhere on shore close to where they'll be arriving and leaving
if you want any sort of shot of the boats; alternatively, use fine grained
film and plan on enlarging a lot.
