I've found that I don't have the skill to compose properly with a 17mm --
either you go for the tricky shots where the extra field of view really has
an effect, but I never think of those, or you just try to fit that extra bit
of [whatever] into the picture -- and every time I've tried that, it just
makes the subject look really small.
I've got a lot of landscapes that were huge vistas in person, but look
amazingly unimpressive when squashed down to a 6x4.. Now, if I were to get
them enlarged and cropped appropriately, maybe that would change, but, for
me, it's not as useful a lens as I thought it'd be.
In cities, it's a different matter -- there, it helps to get that extra
distance from the subject that otherwise you might not fit in -- so it does
have a purpose, but for me at any rate, it's a fairly specialised one.
