Here's some more detail:
The 2, like the 1, reads the light near the eyepiece in Manual mode. When you
have the sun behind you, light streams into the prizm
area backwards, *through the eyepiece*. The meter "saw" lots and lots of light
and so it gave you 1/125. That's Manual mode and
it's just like a 1.

Now let's talk about Auto mode. Before you take the picture in Auto mode, a 2
is giving you a "preview reading" of what the
exposure will be. This "preview reading" is made just like the Manual reading
but it's not as smart as it WILL be when the exposure
starts. Let's say you're using the self-timer. As the timer runs, the display
is saying 1/125 because it's fooled.
Here's where it gets interesting. When the timer runs out, the mirror comes up
and the "preview reading" is discarded on purpose!
The 2 takes new light readings *during* the exposure, without being fooled by
the extra eyepiece light. There's an awful lot to it
but that's the short version. When the sun is behind you, Auto is smarter.
The 3, 4, and PC (40) are smarter like this *all* the time.
