Hi Peter,
Sounds like a great trip -- i'm jealous!
My 2-cents worth... you might want to consider taking a 75-150 and a 2x
along -- they're small, light, cheap, easily replaceable and takes you up to
300. I spent a few years backpacking through southeast asia and asia with a
2n, 50/1.4, 75-150, CRC 2x and a 28/2 (which saw the least use) and a T20
flash as my total kit. Never felt that i was missing anything, and the
75-150 with the 2x gave me a 150-300 range which got me some shots i
wouldn't otherwise have. (Actually i started out with a 1n, but that was
stolen in India, so replaced it with a 2n from Oz, but that's a different
story...)
I still have all of the above gear, all still looking close to new, though
the 2n is finally ready for its first CLA.... (hello John?!)
Have a great time!
RickM

50mm/f1.4 (low light, snap shot, people) and 90mm/f2 (nature, general
purpose) lens, as well as a small Minolta TC-1 P&S (with a 28mm/f3.5).
