Moose,
My friend has 3 catagories for tripods, they are:
Always on me Tripods
When I am not too far away from the car Tripods
Need an assistant with me Tripods
I really love his Bogen. Will probably get me one, one of these days.
And then you have the Arca Swiss ball head + Gitzo Godzilla tripods
that is used to hold up a building from falling. Got a few
astrophotography friends. This is what they have... in their backyards.
That's all fine, but when I'm frolicking on the beaches of Thailand, I
don't think that's what I want.
I played (to the annoyance of the store owner) with every tripod, I
tested them all out, and found that if I don't raise the center column,
it is very sturdy. If I want more stability, I don't extend the last
legs, and squat. Now it's very sturdy. My gf, who can't believe I'm
going to take a tripod with me, was surprised at how light it was. The
build quality is not bad, it's not a Gitzo, but then again, not priced
like one either.
At $50USD, I don't think I can go wrong..
I figure, a so-so tripod in hand, is worth more than a great tripod at home.
