I have read that the distinctive beat is because the rotor tips are
exceeding the speed of sound so you get a sonic boom.

They also have a distinctive beat to the rotor noise owing,
apparently, to the fact that it uses a two-bladed rigid rotor. You
hear the beat when it is approaching and it has been used in many a
military soundtrack.
