You have it right of course.
Any (non-feathered) Kiwi can make / fix anything with No.8 fencing wire.
(Commonly called just "No. 8").
What most don't know is that No. 8 is difficult to come by now. No. 8 is
rather thick fairly soft normal-strength zinc-coated steel; most of what is
available now is high-tensile No. 10, 12 or even higher. Much thinner, hard
and brittle.
