But the later MD1 recess isn't for anything but the OM-1 cap (the bayonet
type). I tried it on my other MD1 (which is in the shop at present, but
trust me)

I'm not sure your logic works :) The early OM-1 didn't have a cap, because
it couldn't use a motor drive, so, it wouldn't make sense to not have the
cap holder.....
Isn't the cap holder for an OM2S/OM3/OM4 MD cap anyway? It is on the MD2.
